This Week in Music NFTs - Oct 31
Presave NFTs. Should Music NFTs contain music? Another full drop calendar complimented by my collector thesis.
There were two main topics driving this week’s conversations.
Using NFTs to drive Spotify plays
Should Music NFTs contain music?
We saw both Showtime and Kids of the Apocalypse launch novel ways to engage collectors to drive Spotify presaves.
One gave you a free NFT, the other entered you into a raffle to get a free NFT.
Regardless - the thesis is that collectors will presave a song to receive something of value.
I’ve seen a few teams exploring this integration, and it seems likely that more and more teams will build products to drive growth outside of web3 using web3 incentives.
We saw a number of thoughts around whether Music NFTs need to contain music.
You can find some reactions here and here.
My opinion is yes - Music NFTs need to contain music.
Otherwise - we’re back to selling merchandise.
The music needs to be at the center of the experience.
As Music NFTs scale, there will be more challenges to enforce proper payouts and make sure all parties and rights-holders are being fairly compensated.
However - thanks to Music NFTs, artists can keep their rights.
Rather than needing to sell masters, artists can sell Music NFTs.
While it’s not 1:1, the ability to seek capital from a new demographic of collectors should change the way artist’s think about retaining their rights, and in turn - allow us to move towards a sovergn area of music.
There’s a saying in web3. Not your keys - not your crypto.
What if the same applied to music?
What if artists retained all their rights, and educated their peers to do the same?
Web3 is less about trying to disrupt the existing system and more about leveraging the parameters and frameworks that exist behind closed doors today.
Anyways - I shared my thoughts about collecting Music NFTs in a post this week.
Here’s how it translates to this week’s drops.
