Thank you for your support over the last 14 months.

When we launched Invest in Music we had one goal. Creating a home for the onchain music community.

After 58 podcast episodes, over 60 newsletters, artist spotlights, and thousands of mints across all our different series - we’re very proud to have delivered on that promise.

We’d like to give a special thanks for Sound, Pods, Spinamp, Mirror, Bello, Optimism and NFT Now for being key partners in our journey.

Our motto is and always will be creating a path for fans to become collectors.

That’s why today we’re proud to announce that we’re doubling down on a new venture - Sonata.

For those who have been following us, you’ll know that we’ve been doubling down on Farcaster and onchain social at large.

Sonata is our bet on the next chapter of onchain music - a client to tip curators for sharing songs.

Here’s what you need to know and how to get involved.

Sunsetting Invest in Music

For as passionate as we are about onchain music - the sector is not growing at a pace that makes running the outlet sustainable.

We’ve noticed stagnation on the number of new collectors entering the space, and have not seen growth in most of our key metrics over the last 3 months.

This does not mean we do not believe in our core thesis, it simply means we need to adapt to meet the market where it is currently at.

As of today - the following changes will go into effect:

• Our podcast and newsletter will be ingested by Coop Records with a fresh coat of paint

• Our core team will focus our day to day efforts on bootstrapping Sonata

All our historic content will continue to exist across Twitter, Spotify, Youtube and onchain outlets like Pods and Spinamp.

However - we will not be posting new content from these channels and instead be focusing our efforts on building the brand around Sonata.

What is Sonata?

Sonata is a home for all music shared on Farcaster.

We aggregate all casts that link to a song on Spotify, Soundcloud and Sound and showcase it in a feed for the community to upvote.

It represents the ethos of what we set out to do with Invest in Music - create a home for curators to be rewarded for sharing great music.

Rather than relying solely on collecting music, we’re creating an economic layer through tipping - building on the core tenets popularized by projects like DEGEN through a native token called NOTES.

We’re launching NOTES with a retroactive airdrop to everyone who’s posted music on Farcaster along with:

• Holders of the Invest in Music Pass

• Invest in Music Podcast collectors

• Recipients of the Onchain Curator grant program

These amounts will vary - and the token will live on a custom Base L3 through Stack at launch.

The airdrop correlates to a daily allowance which can be used to upvote and tip music that you enjoy.

Why Now?

We’ve been brainstorming new ways to shift the focus of Invest in Music for months.

We kicked around ideas for prediction markets for music and a series to remint historic drops on Base.

While these concepts were exciting on the surface, we ultimately landed on them being too niche to reach a wider audience beyond the people in onchain music today.

We believe that Sonata is a fundamentally different approach to curation in the fact that it takes the core tenants of token incentives and applies it to a behavior that everyone already does - sharing music they love.

We were heavily inspired by projects like Degen, HypeMachine and Launchcaster - and wanted to create an MVP to prove concept of the idea.

To be clear - we are still very bullish on onchain music and more specifically the idea of collecting unlimited and limited editions of songs.

We hope that Sonata can become a vessel to further incentivize collecting - and act as a growth mechanism to reward our users for doubling down on their love of a song by collecting it onchain.

That being said - 99.9% of all music in the world today is not onchain, and we believe that crypto can be layered onto it without requiring it to be onchain in the first place.

What to Expect

The podcast will resume as a Coop Records property in May.

Sonata will be debuting today - and we invite all of our community members to be the first to use it here.

Running Invest in Music this last year has been an amazing learning process.

We fully leaned into being an onchain media organization and believe there are a lot of key learnings here that can be adapted to this upcoming cycle.

We are focused on turning Sonata into a cash-flow positive business and want to experiment with novel new onchain mechanisms of doing so.

Farcaster and Base continue to be a place where onchain music thrives.

This week - Farcaster revealed a new priority mode - and Base shared that almost $2.5B of USDC are on the network.

We’re gearing up for Farcon next week in LA, with Farconcert coming up Thursday night.

Mindchatter dropped his genesis “Brain Pills,” a fan favorite with almost 200K streams on Spotify that’s about to pass 500 mints.

Babsy dropped their genesis track “Yet” - further immersing the Th3rd Brain catalog in the onchain world.

Never B Alone dropped a new track with Gina Tuner, serving as the fourth release so far.

DANC3 uploaded “TINY TREE ($BONSAI)” to Orb to celebrate Earth Day. The track uses Suno AI with custom lyrics.

Onchain earnings are becoming more accessible by the day.

Zora integrated credit cards and Apple Pay while Fabric announced an accelerator to help five creators earn recurring revenue through onchain subscriptions.

This comes on the back of Drakula sending out their second week of creator payouts and IYK announcing their Creator:Chipped finalists.

We’re seeing a lot more experimentation with custom mints - with many artists dropping songs that you can mint with HIGHER, ENJOY, DEGEN, and others.

This all points towards creators testing new formats to earn onchain revenue. We’re seeing a strong shift towards tipping being the primary source of earnings (on top of mints) and more creators leaning into actions that earn them tips rather than mints.

It’s very in line with the general market shift of free mints and open editions and everyone is trying to figure out what’s next.

Onchain social is finding new ways to support creators.  

Drakula launched their creator fund - filled with 20M DEGEN (~$400K) to support the best creators on the onchain TikTok.

Spinamp made the first music playback Farcaster frame, making it easy for anyone to listen to a song and collect it directly on the timeline.

Optimism launched a new retro framework - and we wrote an article breaking it down.

It looks like onchain social is here to stay - and we’re excited to see how artists will leverage it to reach real new fans in innovative ways.

Optimism announced a new era for their retroactive rewards program.

Now rebranded as Retro Funding, the collective has allocated 850M OP (∼$3.3B) to the program that rewards impact across the Superchain.

Previously operating as a broad, annual event, the rewards program will now be segmented into four distinct categories, each with its own deadlines.

The goal of these changes is to refine the OP allocation process by narrowing the focus of each round, providing participants with a clearer understanding of what impact will be rewarded.

What Should I Know?

There are four categories in the Retro Funding program:

If you’re an artist, creator or builder, you should submit under the ‘Onchain Builders’ category, with deadline in May, one month from now.

This round rewards builders growing Optimism's reach and impact by attracting new users, amplifying network effects, and increasing protocol engagement across the Superchain.

Although these guidelines don’t go into the specifics on how impact will be measured under this category, we’re confident that Optimism will share more details soon.

From their announcement:

“Every Base project is eligible for Retro Funding, every Mode project is eligible for Retro Funding, every Zora project is eligible for Retro Funding, every Farcaster project is eligible for Retro Funding, every sound.xyz project is eligible for Retro Funding, every OP Chain is eligible for Retro Funding, everyone, anywhere putting the work in to improve Optimism is eligible for Retro Funding.”

Why Should I Care?

Retro Funding offers a new opportunity to be recognized for your contributions to the Optimism collective, across Base, Zora, and OP mainnet.

After distributing over 200M OP through airdrops, retros, and grants, Optimism began to actively involve artists and creators in RetroPFG III.

Culminating in the launch of the ‘We <3 the Art’’ competition, and Airdrop #4, both targeted at artists and creators.

With the deadline just one month away, we encourage artists and creators to seize this opportunity and participate, even if they were not rewarded in previous rounds.

As Optimism continues to iterate based on community feedback , remember that we will be participating in governance from Invest in Music.

While the market is seeing a spike - music hasn’t broken through.

Vault.fm launched a new subscription product in partnership with James Blake along with features in Pigeons and Planes, Complex and dozens of other major music outlets. It may not be fully onchain - but the principles of direct to fan relationships are a huge step forward.

Crypto is up - is music next?

We survived the crypto bear market and consumer apps are getting ready to take on a new audience. And they’re doing it by putting crypto in the background.

Privy launched Spotify logins - easily letting anyone create a wallet using their Spotify account.

Stack announced a $3M seed round to build onchain loyalty programs alongside an early teaser of a new app to add your favorite artists called Boombox.

Oscillator launched their first product - Fanscore in partnership with co-founder RAC.

Audius debuted their native Frames and We <3 the Art is set to announce the winners of their 1.2M OP onchain art contest this Monday.

All this goes to show that onchain music is putting the crypto in the back, and focused on highlighting the products first.

It comes alongside a wider push for true mainstream adoption - and truly feels like we’re just one leg away.
